Sorbonne Université , supervisor Prof. H. Roussel.

This task is devoted to the development of standardized phantoms that will provide unified benchmarks and allow comparing the results achieved by EM imaging with other modalities. The phantoms will be used to assess the devices in WP4-WP5. They will be realized with 3-D printed technology and adapted to the geometry of the devices in WP4-WP5. The 3-D printed phantoms will be filled with liquid mixtures that mimic different tissues at microwaves. Particular attention will be devoted to breast and head tissues. This Task will be performed in close collaboration with the clinical partner organization UP7.

Objectives:

  • Design and production of 3-D printed breast and head phantoms adapted to the geometry of the devices in WP4-WP5, and their applications (cerebrovascular diseases, hyperthermia, tumor detection); activity in strong collaboration with P. Plaisance, H. Chabriat and E. Jouvent from UP7;
  • Production and dielectric characterization of mixtures that mimic different breast and head tissues (fat, fibro-glandular, brain, cerebral spinal fluid (CSF), blood, bone, skin, lymph,…) in the microwave frequency range;
  • Computation of the electromagnetic field inside the phantom with and without tumor or infarcted tissue mimicking anomaly;
  • Influence of the coupling media, the structure material, the working frequency, the source, the type of anomaly, the composition of the breast or head;
  • Use of the phantoms STL (STereoLithography) files to include a priori information in microwave imaging algorithms;
  • Application for hyperthermia and tumor/CVA (CerebroVascular Accident) follow-up.

Expected Results:

  • Breast and head phantom prototypes adapted to the microwave imaging devices and to the applications
  • Development of microwave imaging algorithms in conjunction ESR7 and ESR8 with using the structure of the phantoms as a priori information
