Task 2 - Characterization of the tissue dielectric properties

NUIG , supervisor Dr. M. O’Halloran , ESR N. Ištuk.

This Task will aim at assessing how accurate and adequate are tissue permittivity values currently reported in literature, and how the tissue dielectric values should be measured in terms of sensing volume. This study will rely on an extensive, systematic measurement campaign of the dielectric properties of a broad range of human tissues, to perform a careful histopathological examination of all tissue samples measured. This activity will be carried out in close collaboration with the National Tissue Biobank at NUIG as well as with the clinical partner organization UP7. It will lead to the development of an open-access repository of dielectric properties of human tissue (activity in collaboration with industrial partner Neurent Medical). This repository will provide both a reference for future studies and a platform for new EM-based imaging and therapeutic applications.

Objectives:

  • Examine the dielectric properties of a broad range of human tissues, in close collaboration with the National Tissue Biobank at NUIG;
  • Complete careful histopathological examination of all tissue samples measured;
  • Develop an open-access repository of dielectric properties of human tissue;
  • Use this repository as a platform for new EM-based imaging and therapeutic applications, in collaboration with the NEU partner.

Expected Results:

  • Digital repository of human tissues’ dielectric properties;
  • Guidelines for selection of statistically-appropriate sample sizes and histopathological categorization of adopted samples.
